CRICKET comic Andy Zaltzman has agreed to be the King’s Road Cricket & Social Club’s honorary president.
KRCSC burghers approached the South London-based funnyman, who writes a regular blog for ESPN Cricinfo, on Twitter last night and persuaded him to be the face of Battersea’s finest friendly side.
Asked if he fancied taking on the role, Oxford-educated Zaltzman, who once lived in Balham, said: “Depends. Do I get my own helicopter?”
The Road replied: “We can get you a Chopper? Second hand, from eBay like…”
Then Zaltzman said: “Deal!”
Zaltzman is an ideal choice of honorary president for King’s Road. An avid cricket fan, he claims he once scored 6 in 75 minutes in an Under-15 match, and failed to hit a six between the ages of 9 and 23.
The stand-up also says he would have been ideally suited to Tests, had not a congenital defect left him unable to play the game to anything above genuine village standard.
Zaltzman joins fellow comics David Mitchell, Tim Vine and Tubes from Soccer AM who have pledged support for The Road.
Cricketers Mike Atherton, Matthew Hoggard, Andy Strauss, Darren Gough, Alex Tudor and Darren Bravo have already revealed themselves to be fans.
And The Wire star Idris Elba, SAS hardman Andy McNabb, rugby great Rob Andrew and daytime telly legend Henry Kelly have also said they support The Road.
