Bats out of Hell

The Road ventured down to Fortress Dundonald™  needing 9 points to reach the LPL final on their annual hunt for South London glory. After the bombshell that the Bats would not be providing teas, no further motivation was needed.

The Road lost the toss and were put into bat. The 2 Dans (Sherman and Johnson) strode out to bat, seeing off an initial maiden before hitting 6 off the second over thanks to a lovely boundary. This would be a good day. All further record of this batting innings has been wiped so we must assume that the Road put on a glorious batting display and there shall be no further questions…..

A flat looking pitch that could not have better hidden it’s surprises

Sadly despite the best efforts to hack into the play cricket servers this game does still exist. Roaders of a nervous disposition look away now…. In the 3rd over Dan Johnson was bowled by Moin (Road 6-1). Craigie bucked the trend of the innings by getting out to the other opening bowler, succumbing to a diving slip catch (12-2). Sherman was pinned lbw by Moin the following over (12-3) and was quickly followed 3 balls later by Mandy who was bowled (12-4). In the next Moin over Chinmay was bowled (12-5) leaving Moin with figures of 4-4-0-4. At this point a local pigeon that had been watching with interest took such offence to the Roads batting that it flew off, passing briefly to leave a nice deposit on the scorebook.

CMac and Nimet were now at the crease looking to rebuild. CMac looked like he’d never been away, blocking the good balls whilst punishing the loose deliveries to the boundary. Sadly after a wonderful 13, doubling the Roads score, it was one shot too many, getting caught off the bowling of the Bats skipper Davison (32-6). Oscar came and went in similar fashion (34-7) and Nimets resistance was also ended, falling lbw to Hope (36-8). At this point talk on the sidelines was turning to important matters such as, “Where shall we go and watch the community shield?” and “Do you think your chicken triple sandwich has a partner chicken triple made up of the other halves?”. Fortunately Ben and Browny had no time for such frivolities. Ben, having faced 14 dot balls, got off the mark with a scurried 2 before swiftly dispatching the ball to the boundary 2 balls later. At the other end Browny was batting on a different pitch to the other batters, hitting 2 4s and a 6 in his swift 15 off 8. Sadly all good things must come to an end, and today was a day for things to end quickly, with Browny caught off the bowling of Nair (52-9). As the rest of the road were preparing for an early finish and working out how to avoid telling their partners the game finished at 4pm, Ben and Ali set about gaining some respectability for the Road. Both batters played superbly, slowly building a partnership. The Bats got so worried, they turned back to Moin, who returned to the attack with consecutive maidens, leaving him 6-6-0-4. Dreaming of a perfect bowling day Moin ran in for his final over. However on the 4th ball, Ben guided the ball beautifully down to 3rd man for 4 to the biggest cheers of the batting innings from the watching Roaders. Still, I suppose 7-6-4-4 isn’t bad….

The Road needed to score at least 100 to have a chance of gaining enough points to reach the LPL final. However it sadly wasn’t to be as Ben was bowled on 20, with the Road all out on 91 as Ali supported superbly with 16 not out. That shouldn’t taint a superb, career-best knock from Ben who showed many experienced batters how it was done!

Needing early wickets to have any hope of victory, the skipper led from the front removing both an opener and the number 3 for 6 runs each, leaving the Bats 33-2. With the other opener scoring quickly, a miracle was needed. Up stepped Chris Brown to bowl the opener for 25. The very next delivery he had Abdul caught leaving Browny on a hattrick. Sadly it wasn’t to be as the Foord blocked out the delivery. However Foord wouldn’t last long, as at the end of Browny’s next over he was dismissed for a duck leaving the Bats 41-5. Browny wasn’t done yet, dismissing Nair with the first ball of his next over to set up another hattrick ball. This time it was right on the money, swinging in and pinning the batter in front. Terrified at the noises coming out of Browny during the appeal, the Umpire raised the finger to give Browny his hattrick and 5th wicket of the innings, leaving the Bats scrambling on 45-7. Road skipper then dismissed Bats skipper and then Browny got one more to leave the Bats 60-9 at drinks.

The Road optimistically strode out after drinks, however they were about to meet their old nemesis from the first innings, Moin. Try as they might, the Road bowlers just couldn’t find a way through, with chances falling frustratingly short of fielders. Moin managed to milk the strike, with the number 11 batter only facing 1 delivery, and eventually steered the Bats to a 1 wicket victory with his 7th 4 in a fine innings of 39 off 32 to complete his perfect cricketing day out. It’s Moin’s world, we’re just all living in it.

What started out as the potential for a very bleak day after the first few overs, ended in heartbreak but the Road showed fantastic spirit to battle all the way through. In particular a career best 20 off 47 for Ben and a fine 6-17 for Browny, including a first hattrick. We’re coming for you next year LPL….

Happier scenes from just 3 days prior… suggesting our future may not lie in red ball
