King’s Road enjoyed the sweet taste of success with a five wicket win that sent Cairns Fudge packing.
Veteran run machine Dean Aldridge scored a half century to set up a successful run chase by the Orange Caps in the LPL clash at Wandsworth Common.
The Road’s bowlers restricted the home side to 151, a challenging total but one which could have been far higher after the Fudge were 70 for 1 midway through their innings.
A sharp slip catch by Giles Fagan off Matt Small’s bowling resulted in an early wicket, but a second wicket stand of 60 frustrated the Orange Caps.
The bowlers beat the bat and chances flew just out of reach, with Jeremy Smith, James Couldrey and David Hughes all unlucky not to take spectacular efforts.
The breakthrough came when Fagan pouched a return catch off Lamb, which was shortly followed by Matt Cocken trapping a victim lbw.
While wickets tumbled at the other end, the Fudge’s number three Griffiths progressed to 66 before being cleaned up by a pacy delivery from Smith.
Fagan and Aldridge combined for a run out, Small picked up a second wicket thanks to a catch from Smith.
A memorable innings in the field was completed as Fagan snaffled his third catch off the final over, bowled by mystery spinner Amir Alipour.
Small finished with figures of 2 for 32, Smith took 1 for 24, Cocken 1 for 35, skipper James Couldrey was 0 for 16 off 3.3 overs before a back injury forced him to give the ball to Fagan who took 1 for 22.
Rossi finished wicketless, with 15 coming off his first two overs but just one in his third and final set of six at a time when the Fudge were hoping to force the pace of their innings. Alipour’s one over at the death left him with 1 for 4.
Aldridge and former skipper Raju Mazumder began the reply, with the Bangladeshi blocker scoring two before being forced to withdraw by ATM removing his middle stump.
This brought Fagan to the crease and together with Aldridge began the task of chasing down Cairns Fudge’s score.
The pair put on 58 for the second wicket before Fagan was bowled for 16. Dan Sherman was next in, but could only mange to score five before being caught as ATM cashed in.
Cocken joined Aldridge at the crease, but the heat was taking its toll on The Don who was dismissed for 55 shortly after being struck down by cramp.
With the score on 109, leaving the Orange Caps needing 43 runs from 50 balls, David Hughes was the next man in.
Together, Cocken and Hughes steered the Road to the brink of victory, with a partnership of 38 including some wild shots from the Welshman and three fours from the Lancastrian, who finished 18 not out.
When Hughes departed for 12, having missed a straight one going for one shot too many, Kiwi Messiah Smith strode to the crease to knock off the five remaining runs and seal the win with an over to spare.
