KING’S Road may be starved of success on the field this season but there’s one thing they can’t be beaten on – our tea-riffic food.
The legendary Orange Caps have picked up a top gong for teasmaking – thanks to club skip and reigning Teasmaker of the Year Matt “The Masterchef” Cocken.
Big Matt – a proud Lancastrian – was named Yorkshire Tea’s Tea Lady of the Year winner for July in the latest edition of Brixton-based All Out Cricket magazine.
He was honoured for his efforts on page 27 of September’s issue of the mag having beaten off stiff competition for the title from around the UK.
Matt’s citation read: “You might notice that Matt Cocken, of King’s Road Cricket and Social Club, is definitely not a ‘lady’, except in some warped Little Britain reality.
“Nevertheless, he supplies some pretty top drawer scran for his team’s friendly matches and the Road are gaining quite a reputation on the South London circuit.”
Matt was quoted as saying: “Our fixtures sec challenged me, as a joke, to bring fillet steak, lobster thermidor and champagne for tea one week.
“I took it as a personal challenge and managed to pull it off using tinned lobster in pasta shells with thermidor sauce, ‘whoopsed’ barbecue steaks with a garlic, lemon and sage marinade, and some fizz that was on offer at the time.”
Matt told us he couldn’t tea-lieve it.
