THE sun finally came out for The Road this summer as Jamie Keating and Sham de Silva put in fine all-round performances to hammer the OJ Wanderers.
On the first real summer’s day of cricket this season, the Orange Caps skittled the home side for just 105 in a hastily-rearranged match that was switched from Surbiton to New Malden at the last minute.
Matt S started the collapse at Beverley Park bowling one Wanderer, having another trapped lbw and having his third caught off a top edge by Leon Watson.
Keats unleashed his mystery “moon ball” to weigh-in with three middle order wickets – all bowled – before Sham cleaned up the tail.
Both Keats and Sham finished with figures of 3 for 10 and Smally ended with 3 for 12 off 5.
In between, Leon – bowling with an injured right hand – picked up a scalp off a thin edge caught behind.
It left The Road – captained for the first time by Mark Isham – needing just a modest 106 to win on the grassy but even surface.
Despite the early loss of Raju Mazumder, bowled for a duck, followed by Dave Hughes for 6 and then the skip Mark for 3, the result was never in doubt as The Road boasted an unusually solid batting line-up.
Dan Sherman was harshly-adjudged lbw for 7, a decision the umpire later admitted was wrong.
But Sham, so often The Road’s best bat this season, followed up his three wickets to post a classy 40 in a 90-minute innings that turned the screw before he was bowled.
Keats followed that up with 28 before he was caught out just before the end.
Dan Howard hit the winning run to finish 1 not out with Chris M 6 not out as King’s Road bounced back from their midweek defeat against the Battersea Badgers to record a four-wicket win.
