COMPLACENT King’s Road let a winning position slip from their grasp in a tight Twenty20 against Bunga Bunga CC today.
The Orange Caps’ five-game winning run came to an abrupt end as they lost by just six runs at Haydon’s Road in Wimbledon.
Rain had put an end to the scheduled 40 over game after just 8.2 overs.
The Road, captained for the first time by beanpole batsman Mark Isham, went into bat and were reduced to 33 for 3 in wet conditions when the game was abandoned.
However, after two hours the weather improved enough for a T20 to be played and both sides took to the pitch in bright sunshine.
The Road then restricted the Bunga Bunga boys to just 124 with Leon Watson taking two in two balls to leave him on a hat-trick at the end.
But despite needing just a run a ballย on a pitch that appeared to be drying out, the boys from Battersea fell disappointingly short.
A handy opening stand between David Hughes, who got a season’s best 16, and Sham de Silva, who provided the backbone of the innings with 27, got King’s Road off to a promising start.
Then when Bunga Bunga bagged skipper Mark and snared an incredible one-handed diving catch to dismiss Sham the rot set in.
Dan Sherman also fell to a sharp caught and bowled, and Jeremy Smith fell swiftly after before Leon, playing in his first match since breaking his thumb, and Matt Small were left needing an unlikely 13 from the last over.
Leon holed out with two balls to go and The Road finished seven runs short of the win on 118 for 6.
