KING’S Road need 155 with six wickets in hand to avoid the follow-on after a disasterous first day of the Super Test.
The Road were carted all around the park as the Battersea Badgers racked up a first innings score of 350 before declaring in the afternoon session.
Nick Foord (53), Alex Morse (75n/o) and Robin Mackrell (68) all bludgeoned 50s as the Orange Caps struggled to break down their rivals.
All seven of the Badgers to take to the crease got into double figures with Jan Marchant first out for 29 with the score on 54.
Captain Peter Warman was next to fall for 37 – after putting on 66 for the second wicket – before opener Martin Cloke also departed for 37.
After that it was one-way traffic as Nick, Alex and Robin smashed their way to 350 before Badgers skip Pete declared after tea with 6 wickets down.
Only John Smalley – taking 1 for 31 off 10 – and Tony Swann in his first spell impressed for The Road with the ball as all the others rarely looked like taking a wicket.
In all captain Matt Cocken, who sent down 10 overs himself, used a staggering nine bowlers in an attempt to pick up the wickets he needed.
It left King’s Road with 28 tricky overs to negotiate before the end of the day’s play at Battersea Park.
In response, openers Mark Isham and Tom Barnes put on a defiant stand but could not hold on.
Leon Watson was out for a disappointing duck and nightwatchman Raju Mazumder fell just before the close.
It left Matt and John not out overnight with a mountain to climb on day two.
Play will resume today with The Road desperately hoping Matt and John can put on a stand and the tail will wag enough to get past the follow on target.
