How players introduced themselves:
“My old team keeps recruiting better and/or younger players. I’m looking to join a team that respects me as an opening bowler and will be willing to recognise me as their best all-rounder ever.”
CB
Captain
Proud captain of a group of children and top order batsmen who enjoys playing straight batted shots, much to the amazement of the lower order. Is 7m tall and still growing.
Vice Captains
Joint VC and KitSec, Pinks loves wearing at least 4 items of denim clothing to attend each and every 40 degree cricket match in a burnt London park. A very stylish and fast scoring opener, he switches into his BowledFinger alter-ego when introduced into the tired bowling attack at over 30.
Joint VC and social sec, Woody is coming off the highs of organising a successful Portuguese tour. Capable of hitting sixes exclusively over extra cover, we all secretly miss the extravagant dives over the ball in the field, which seem to have sadly been somewhat coached out of him.
Joint VC and Treasurer of strict monetarist tendencies. Rumoured to enjoy asking for match fees more than playing. Sham has two Road centuries to his belt and is pictured here at his favourite South Coast pitch. He tried to repeat this success the following year on one leg, but his teammates had other ideas. Shown impressive strike bowling ability these past winter nets. Waiting to bowl himself when Pete is away.
Squad
An Aldershot Town vigilante, Will is another fine 2022 newcomer and joint-reigning Top Tourist, after an excellent International season. A great right-arm seamer, expected to also set the batting world alight in 2023.
CB is our hard working opening bowler, who loves economy and maidens. He dislikes derailment and any threats to his cherished bowler of the season award. He chugs back diesel and lucky saint like both are going out of fashion. A more than handy batsman, who likes the long off boundary.
Ali is our BallSec, a keen poppadom enthusiast, and skiddiest of fast bowlers. He’s also an attacking lower/middle order batsman, who hit the largest six of 2022 over the Barnes railway line. To prevent himself moving up the order, he made sure to run down the wicket and chip one up next ball.
The new website developer, a task he’s picked up whilst nursing a new injury. Looking set to come back with pace and slog come April. The Road’s resident Aussie, an unenviable role that he fulfils with commitment.
Jonny Bravo: The Road’s 2022 Newcomer of the Season, Dougie is an excellent upper order leftie batsman, vigorous compiler of runs and handy left-arm bowler. Very fast in the field.
The Road’s Head Brewer, Elliott is reportedly working on early prototypes of the Road’s 16th year celebration ale. An incredibly athletic wicket keeper and middle order batsman. Likes playing football and injuring himself ahead of the cricket season.
Mandy: a skillful and aggressive number 4 batsmen and off-spinner (despite being the fastest bowler in nets). He’s a founding member of the Breakfast Club and keen supporter of Reading FC.
The Bear: Keats loves honey, cricket and the Road. After arranging the next year’s fixtures, Keats hibernates through till nets. He spends his summers playing cricket, pawing through the Wandle in desparate hope for salmon, thinking about cricket, growling, and watching cricket. An attacking middle order batsman and specialist Honeytrap bowler with now 150 wickets to his name.
Our professional lobbyist, Dave works tirelessly to keep the Road’s interests at the forefront of the political agenda and works to influence favourable home conditions in the LPL. An attacking upper order batsman and long-time Roader.
Hawkeye is a skillful wicket-keeper and stylish upper order batsman. He is our most travelled cricketing brain and spends his winters scouting out cricketing talent and exploring the cricket conditions we’re likely to face in our away LPL fixtures. Most importantly, he is reigning Teasmaker and is in love with Blondie.
The Universe Ross: our long-playing star leg-spinner, he’s a hater of intraclub teams fielding 12 players, a no-nonsense child of Stoke, and strangely fond of nasty pubs.
Ferg is a batsman who likes the leg side, utilising a strong hockey shot to keep midwicket busy. He likes to surprise the opposition by fumbling the ball on the boundary before hurling it straight into the keeper’s gloves at 50mph as they attempt their third run to him. Showed his style by bringing stuffed vine leaves for tea in the BYOT season of 2020.
One of the wisest and kindest of the Roaders, Sherman is a skillful and powerful opening batsmen and wicket-keeper. A dedicated teasmaker and craftsmen, repairing the toe of his favourite bat every month and fixing half of the Road armoury each winter.
A man of many talents: ferocious spinner, tail-ender, opening batsman, close fielder, and cider connoisseur.
Formerly the ‘Mane’ of rural Devon, Tom is now the Daryl Mitchell of the Road. When he’s not busy teaching the children of SE London, he donates some of his time helping the overgrown children here.
The tallest player on the South London circuit, Mark is the Road’s original resident Ent. A wibbly-wobbler of fine pedigree, an excellent fielder, favourite child of Ferring, and busy developer of the Road’s youth section.
Retired Players
A pinch hitting opener of Kiwi roots, who never quite recovered from the Norwich river water which CB and Cocken introduced him to with Ramming Speed. Since that incident, he decided he liked the Road less than his Tasman neighbours and moved to manage rusk in Aus.
