Magic Majeed Ad it in the bag: Adams cleans up at awards do

MAGIC Adam Majeed has scooped the top award at the club’s glitzy end of season bash – but it was The Road’s new culinary king who cheered most.

Big Matt Cocken sunk to his knees, raised his arms in the air and thanked God he was named The Road’s Teasmaker of the Year for 2009.

The beefy all-rounder beat off stiff competition from last season’s winner Mama Mazumder, sweet-toothed tempter Amir Alipour and cake-baking princess Katie Archer.

When club captain Raju Mazumder announced his name, Matt โ€“ who narrowly missed out last season โ€“ collapsed in pure ecstasy at the honour then jumped for joy.

The night’s big winner though was all-rounder Adam who is now The Road’s Best Bowler, Best Newcomer and Player of the Season for 2009.

The newboy cleaned up in all three categories at The Road’s glitzy awards bash in Wandsworth at the weekend after a sensational first season.

Adam โ€“ who was nominated for Teasmaker of the Year but lost out to Matt – faced stiff competition from Amir Alipour, Tony Swann and Tom Barnes for the Newcomer award.

The swing king also just pipped Dan Howard to the title of Best Bowler after his 19 wicket haul at an average of 13.05 made him The Road’s highest wicket-taker.

In July, all-rounder Adam became the first player to bag a five wicket haul for the team in an incredible burst of 5 for 35 against Beershire.

He’s also chipped in with some important runs and hit his best of 33 not out in his debut match against the London Itinerants.

Accepting the award, Karachi Kid Adam said: โ€œThis means a lot to me. My hero Richie Benaud once said ‘what is life but a game of cricket?’

โ€œI didn’t know what that meant until I started playing with you guys under the watchful eye of captain Raju.

โ€œI have laughed and have cried. I’ve been happy I’ve been sad. But the point is that this the journey of King’s Road. Long live King’s Road.โ€

The night’s other big winner was Leon Watson who bagged Best Batsman and Most Improved Player gongs.

After a miserable season last year, Leon took his batting average from 8.4 to 23.27, hitting three half-centuries along the way to become the club’s all-time highest run scorer.

Rookie Tom Barnes, who couldn’t attend the event, picked up Champagne Moment of the Year for his imperious 128 not out to win the match against the Full Tossers.

It was stunning innings and the club’s historic first century.

Another newboy, teacher Simon Biffen, scooped best fielder for his pin-point fielding โ€“ maybe he could give the rest of the team a masterclass in how to do it next season.

And the wooden spoon for the Most Embarrassment Moment went to the 13-man team that took on Swansea Law Society’s XI on tour and got humiliated.

Award winners were treated to a glass of The Road’s new cocktail Orange C***. But some members admitted they were disappointed with the recipe and believed it needed work to improve it.

In his speech, Raju said: โ€œ2009 has been bigger and better in many senses. We played 18 matches, which is our biggest season. We’ve got a lot of members now โ€“ 25 of you guys โ€“ and we are quite literally bigger and better.

โ€œBut despite the heavy defeats and some disasters there have been significant achievements, significant inroads this season.

โ€œWe’ve managed to field 11 people for every game, just about. We also recorded five wins this season, which was the same as last year bit some of them have been quite memorable โ€“ obviously our first win of this season against the Badgers.โ€

Decked out in an orange tie for the event, Raju added: โ€œMost importantly though for me we recorded our first victory against the Full Tossers โ€“ a team who in 2007 they actually beat us whilst drunk. So that was a significant achievement.

โ€œWe’ve welcomed new people to our team like Adam, Tony, Tom and Andrew Saker. But for me as your captain it’s been a pleasure to see your improvement โ€“ although the stats might not say that!

โ€œWhat I’ve seen is the batsmen are batting more sensibly and all the bowlers are thinking about their fields and there’s a lot more control.โ€

Chairman Matt rounded off the night by saying goodbye to Chris Simmons and paying tribute to club founder Dan Howard. Both are off to live abroad.

He also led a round of applause for the committee.

In his closing speech, Matt said: โ€œIf anyone has any doubts about the direction cricket is going in they just need to take a look at this little club that we’ve started.

โ€œFrom a few mates having a laugh and knocking a ball about in a park, it’s grown into quite possibly the greatest cricket and social club the world has ever seen.

The burly Northerner added: โ€œWhat I really want to say is, ‘I f***ing love this club’. It’s the highlight of my year, it’s one of the main reasons why I moved to London.

โ€œIt makes my summer, it’s absolutely brilliant. Everything we’ve achieved is great.”
