Occasion to forget on last day at Raynes Park

SORRY King’s Road crashed to defeat to end the 2009 season with a whimper.

The Orange Caps suffered another catastrophic batting collapse against Durham Occasionals hitting just 71.

Durham then knocked off the runs with ease to put The Road out of their misery at Raynes Park Cricket Club.

It was a disappointing end to The Road’s rollercoaster season that’s seen them lose 13 matches, win five and draw the club’s first two-day test.

Both sides had struggled to put out a full team as end-of-season lethargy seemed to set in.

Durham had to start the match with only nine men and needed to borrow sub fielders.

The Road were without captain Raju Mazumder and regulars Dan Howard, Kevin Pittaway and James Couldrey.

And when strike bowler and big-hitting batsman Tony Swann was delayed after his car broke down on the way, they faced taking the field with NO specialist bowlers.

To give him time to get there, stand-in skip Matt Cocken won the toss and put King’s Road in to bat.

Inevitably though, their start was an absolute rotter, things never got better and they were bowled out before Tony could get there to play his part.

On what looked like a good pitch, the Occasionals found prodigious swing to have The Road on the ropes at every stage.

Road opener James Pritchard fell with the score on 13, caught in the covers by Orange Cap Jamie Smith subbing in the field off Leith.

Leon Watson, who followed his mid-season purple patch with a drop in form, was bowled second ball by a in-swinger from Robin.

Two balls later David Hughes suffered the same fate, bowled by Robin for a duck.

The pace bowler then continued the rout bowling ringer Manik – drafted in by The Road from rivals Beershire – for 8.

Matt scratched around briefly before being caught behind off Sewell for 1 and Jamie Keating was also caught second ball off the same bowler.

Jamie, pressed into early action after fielding for the Occasionals, put on just 7, rookie Chris Beckett was dismissed for 6 and Amir Alipour, 5.

The only man to put up any resistance was club newboy Mark Isham, playing in his second match for King’s Road, who made 16 not out after coming in at number ten.

Without Tony, the Occasionals allowed Pritch to walk back to the crease for a second go and he put on 8 before being trapped lbw by Baker.

It was another humiliating display by the Orange Caps and the visitors wasted no time in rubbing it in.

With The Road opening with part-time bowlers Leon and Matt, Durham’s openers Metcalfe and Hutchinson smashed 52 before the first wicket fell.

The impressive Mark, bowling leg-spin, got Metcalfe for 26 after a snappy stumping from Manik – but by then there was little to play for.

Twelve runs later Matt picked up the wicket of Hutchinson for 31 as Durham closed in on victory with ease.

Mark got Nathan for a duck as he went for a big hit one ball before the Occasionals reached the target.

In the end, the visitors completely outclassed a depleted King’s Road side. Hopefully the Orange Caps will be able to put up a bigger fight next year.

My God. It really is the end of the season – the less said about that game the better. Maybe we should remember the second game?
I think King’s Road B’s 141 of 12 overs deserved a mention, not to mention King’s Road A’s 105 off 11 attempted run-chase! Also worth a mention were the Teas, superb as always, including some delightful Italian tricolore nibbles. Teas reports every match next season please!
